It is an amazing but sad fact that many Canadians are unaware of who ACTUALLY owns the companies they do business with. Our day-to-day lives are bombarded with advertising put forward by foreign-controlled media (IN Canada) to promote transnational companies as "Canadian". While the subjects of these campaigns may be "Canadian" to some (technical/legal) degree, when push comes to shove, owners who don't live in, nor have a vested interest in Canada (its people and environment) call the shots from outside! And, history has shown (repeatedly) that when the real owners of "Canadian" companies look out for their own interests it rarely works out well for the people, environment, and economy of Canada.

To Canadians who take pride in the history of our commerce and industry (and some well-deserved shame - apologies to First Nations people), it is always heart wrenching to learn of good old Canadian companies being sold out to foreign interests. But even more disturbing, is the stealth and deceptiveness with which the new (non-Canadian) owners work to keep the "sell-outs" under wraps and maintain the illusion that the bought out companies are still just as "Canadian" as they used to be. Unfortunately, the truth of this becomes apparent only when it's too late!

When you see stories in the media about "Canadian" franchise food outlets which can't put tomatoes on your sandwiches because of tainted imported produce and "head office" won't permit safe LOCAL produce to be used instead, consider it your wake-up call and opportunity to understand some of the many problems with supporting franchised or licensed businesses which are subordinate to foreign management. Even though the franchisees may be local and great Canadian folks, they MUST follow the rules of their foreign bosses.
